Who shouldn't use the BMI?

People who should not use the BMI are: anyone under 18, pregnant or nursing women, frail and sedentary elderly people, competitive athletes or body builders.

If you fall under one of these categories, you should consult your doctor about any concerns over weight.

< 18 You are very underweight and possibly malnourished.
< 20 You are underweight and could afford to gain a little weight.
20 - 25 You have a healthy weight range for young and middle-aged adults.
23 - 28 You have a healthy weight range for older adults.
26 - 30 You are mildly overweight.
30 + You are overweight or obese.
